Google Can’t Count Right

October 14th, 2007

Robert Scoble has posted about the number of Google subscribers each of the Techmeme leaderboard blogs have. For some reason though my subscription count in Google reader is showing up as only 196. According to feedburner though, I have thousands of RSS subscribers of which over 52% are using Google reader. That would result in 1000+ subscribers to my AllFacebook.com feed. I have a feeling these numbers are a bit off.

This is definitely a good linkbait article though. Techcrunch has posted about this as well. I’m going to take these numbers with a grain of salt. Instead, I’m going to focus on the number of the Techmeme leaderboard as well as within technorati. Also, daily traffic should be a pretty good measure as well.

Big Announcement Coming Soon

October 10th, 2007

I have been working feverishly over the past couple weeks. I am preparing to launch a new company. I previously wrote about working on Facebook development. I have decided instead to spend most of my time blogging instead. I will be launching something new in the coming weeks. I’ll post about it on here and on AllFacebook.

I haven’t been writing as frequently on here since I have been busy with AllFacebook. That trend is probably going to continue as I am planning on launching something new. I’m extremely excited about it though and I will continue to write about my experience with the launch on this blog. I also will ocassionally cover some random web related issues as well. Thanks for understanding!

Fellow Blogger Rips Me a New One

September 29th, 2007

Today, Donna Bogatin, a fellow blogger decided to rip apart an article I wrote on my AllFacebook.com blog. I wrote about Facebook’s new killer feature that I had envisioned a couple months ago. She calls this my “killer scoop.” That’s funny because I had no intention of this being a big article, I just comment on what I see. Take it for what it’s worth. I think Donna may be a little frustrated because when I write about something that she perceives as “insignificant” somehow I end up getting a bunch of people linking to it. I’ll leave that one alone.

Funny thing is that I still use LinkedIn because other people request me as a contact on there. I am also, equally critical of Facebook on my AllFacebook.com blog. Donna seems to think all I do is speak wonders of the upcoming doom of all social networks outside of Facebook. She is wrong. Maybe Donna is mad that I didn’t come over to help her out at ZDNet. I already received an offer to blog there so my blogging can’t be that bad.

Honestly, I enjoy reading Donna’s blog and have yet to try to criticize her for pieces that she writes. Maybe that’s because she is a “perfect journalist.” I think her real problem is that she knows that anybody with a keyboard and a voice can become just as popular as she is. It doesn’t require an M.B.A. and M.A. from NYU as Donna holds. Merci bien Donna for being so kind. Also, it looks like I’m falling for your linkbait trap. Darn!

Preparing to Launch

August 8th, 2007

I have been offering Facebook development services for the past month or so since the launch of the new Facebook platform. Since I began offering services I have landed some major clients including large media companies. I can’t discuss my portfolio currently since I am under non-disclosure agreements but there is going to be huge news coming in the coming weeks. I have been slow to posting as I try to run a number of different things all while finishing up a full-time contract position. This has been extremely challenging but will prove to be highly rewarding I hope. I am looking forward to launching my offices out of D.C. in the coming weeks.

The article I posted on Sunday discussed a lot of my overload currently. I honestly am going to continue posting on this blog but it is truly hard to keep all these things going simultaneously. I promise to return to a frequent basis in the near future but for the time being posts are going to fluctuate in frequency. If you can’t get enough of my writing, head on over to my other blog All Facebook where I am posting daily about social networking related issues.

I will get back on top of the business and technology postings but for now I am at a max and I am working 17 hour days. Not much more I can say. Thanks for your support!

Silicon Valley Gets Greedy

August 5th, 2007

I have to wonder what’s going on in Silicon Valley. The New York Times posted today about Silicon Valley millionaires not feeling rich. One family in particular had over $2 million in the bank and a $1.3 million house paid off. Not bad right? Well apparently for this one man, Hal Steger, this isn’t good enough. He continues working 12 hour days from 7 to 7 and then works 10 hours over the weekend. Dave Winer agrees with the article and says this of Silicon Valley:

The truth is that the people of Silicon Valley toil to find security in money, never getting there, while avoiding the pleasures of life, including the mythological creativity, spinning on a treadmill, doing nothing but striving to make money, but it’s never enough.

He also states “It’s great to see people on the east coast getting the message. Don’t live in the shadow of this place. There’s nothing there but people trying to make money, without a good idea why.” That’s funny because I didn’t realize that the East coast got the message. There’s Silicon Alley in New York City and to say that the people in NYC (and even here in D.C.) haven’t absorbed some of the same attitude is ludicrous. I see it all around. You know what’s even more frightening? I see it in me.

Jeremy Toeman makes a good point when he says, “It’s these same people that are setting these terrible role models for recent college grads who think they can come out of school, go start some company with a friend or two, and make a few quick million.” Perhaps it is those “terrible role models” that have become role models for myself as well. Perhaps. It is also me that chooses to work crazy hours all for the pursuit of this invisible concept of “success.” It’s not completely invisible though because there is a goal in mind. At least for myself. I truly hope that whenever I reach my goals I don’t fall victim to the same perspective that some of these other individuals have. I think one word sums up the attitude of these individuals: greed. The moral of the story? Don’t let greed catch a hold of you.

Congrats to Gary on your Conan appearance. For those that missed it, I’ve posted it below.

Facebook is Too Friggin Hot

July 18th, 2007

I was trying to come up with a great post last night and this morning for my blog but everywhere I looked, the discussion was about Facebook. Take a look at Techmeme this morning and you will see 5 separate articles about Facebook. I have to wonder how long this can last. Facebook is the current obsession of Silicon Valley and the rest of the blogosphere. I myself have taken part and contributed to the buzz with my AllFacebook blog. I haven’t seen so much buzz surrounding one single product in a long time. The iPhone is the only thing to coming close to rivaling the Facebook buzz. Robert Scoble commented on this yesterday. Apparently people have been complaining that all he talks about anymore is Facebook and iPhone. That’s because both are insanely popular topics right now. I as well wish I could have given you an insightful post today but unfortunately there is just too much buzz surrounding Facebook. Do you think the buzz is going to slow down soon?

iPhone Development is All Hype

July 16th, 2007

I’ve been reading a lot about iPhone applications and development and I have been trying to figure out what is so special about programming for the iPhone. There has been an insane amount of hype surrounding iPhone applications but ultimately an iPhone application is just a website. There are entire meetups being dedicated to iPhone development. While there are also meetups for web developers, is there really any difference? Not really.

When initially announced, one would have imagined that iPhone applications were literally widget-like applications that reside on the phone. Unfortunately those were only dreams. Apple is hoping to suddenly inspire the rest of the web world to adopt new practices that include mobile standards. While I think they may have just inspired a few thousand developers into building “applications” for the phone, I don’t see this as a lasting solution.

Ultimately, the iPhone is a small step forward in the future of mobile development. Rather than opening up their platform they are simply requiring developers to work within the defined constraints of the iPhone. Additionally, developers can only build Safari compatible websites rather than actual applications. Unless Microsoft, Palm, Blackberry, Apple or another mobile OS company opens up their platform for developers, a new competitor will enter the marketplace and rapidly gain marketshare. This new competitor would be the equivalent of what Linux is to Microsoft.

I look forward to the day in which any developer will be able to easily create robust mobile solutions. Currently, the odds of one of the existing mobile providers opening up their existing platform is extremely thin. As I said, the only way this will happen is if a new competitor enters the market. Who will that competitor be? My best guess is Google. Any thoughts?

House 2.0 In D.C.

July 9th, 2007

Inspired by Amit Gupta, I am seriously considering bringing House 2.0 to D.C. What is House 2.0? It is simply a place to live if you want to get a taste of D.C. or are looking to start up your own thing in D.C. and want a great environment to live. The place will be fully furnished, utilities included, have wireless internet and of course its own blog to document the experience and contribute to the residents’ shameless self-promotion. If you would be interested in taking part, shoot me an email or leave a comment. I am working on locking down a house currently, but I am shooting for Arlington, VA (Clarendon/Ballston area) within blocks to the metro. If you have any ideas how to make this environment a better place, please let me know. Additionally for those that move in and are involved in the tech and entrepreneurial world, we will help you get active in the community. I’m aiming to have the place purchased and ready to go by the fall. So let me know if you are interested!  Also, if you have any advice, let me know!

Off to the Beach

July 7th, 2007

As you may have noticed, my postings have become less frequent and my life has become more hectic.  It’s officially time to get away.  I’m off to the beach!  Maybe I’ll have a random posting up sometime this weekend, but get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather!  Have a great weekend!

Insanely Busy

June 30th, 2007

As you have probably noticed, my posting frequency has gone down. Friday was my last day at Fleishman-Hillard and I’m on to bigger and better things now. I am going to have some pretty huge announcements in the coming days but for the time being you’ll have to wait to find out. I have been actively blogging over at AllFacebook and will continue to do so for the time being. That has been taking up most of my time recently.
Additionally, I had a great time at Social Media club the other night. I had the fortune to co-host with Peter Corbett. It was definitely different than typical Social Media Clubs. We talked about Facebook and soon after starting the discussion, people broke up into groups and started talking. I think there was more networking and socializing going on than typical but it was a great time none the less. I have some new things that I need to post about but I’ve been slammed with the new projects that I will be announcing soon, so stay tuned!

Are You Getting the iPhone?

June 28th, 2007

iPhoneThe iPhone launches tomorrow and people are going to be rushing to get their hands on one. Apparently there is a huge demand for the phone which will run $499 plus a $59.99 a month plan through AT&T Wireless. The phone is definitely a costly item. I recently decided to go ahead and buy the Blackberry Curve rather than waiting for the iPhone because I was highly skeptical of the iPhone keyboard. To counter the buzz that had been circulating about a non-friendly keyboard, Apple released a video yesterday demonstrating the keyboard functionality. I watched the video and I have to say that I’m still a little skeptical. Conversely, I can’t argue that I can type 80 words per minute on my Blackberry Curve. Someone should release a typing speed test for the Blackberry. Anyone know of one? If you plan on getting your own iPhone chances are you are going to have to wait in long lines given that people are camping out, even the employees. Tomorrow will be a big day for iPhone fans worldwide. Will you be getting one?
