Today I got an email notification that I had been added to the Jaxtr beta. I signed up and now have added a small link on my sidebar for the time being to see how well it works. Jaxtr enables users to click the link on my sidebar and then call a local number to contact me without disclosing my number. In all honesty, I’m not quite sure why I wouldn’t just post my phone number on my blog, but that is neither here nor there. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I’m not quite sure how valuable these web based VOIP solutions are given that in some countries (such as Israel), it is cheaper for people to call long distance than locally. I’m not quite sure why this is, but I know that it is the case with my sister. Anyways, try it out, and let me know what you think.

Seems very convoluted to do something
simple - can’t I just email/IM/Skype
instead?

Hi Peter,
It definitely would be easier, except you wouldn’t be connected via your actual telephone. While you can do voice via IM and Skype, you can’t have both telephones connected for the price of a local call. I’m sure they’ll add this eventually. It is pretty much the same thing as Google’s click-to-call that they once added to their Google Maps.

Unlike Google, this is opt-in, and your phone number stays anonymous. Also, you have call controls, such as sending certain callers always to voice mail or banning them even from voice mail. If you have multiple phones (landline vs. mobile), you can also control where calls arrive. And, yes, no headset required. I like my mobile because I like to receive calls not only when I sit in front of my computer
